clean | laundry - the sin of perfection

vainio.seitsonen's maxi dress

It's perfect, and I shall love it forever and ever. I will wear it for Christmas, for my name day, for the office party, for going to the opera, for drinking a glass of wine with friends, for champagne at New Year's, for dancing and listening to music. I will wear it in the winter with flowing wraps and in the summer with bare feet.

Buy perfection from Liike.

light | vision - Saara Salmi

The rabbit hole was deeper than we thought. Get lost in the darkness as the story of Alice continues in Saara Salmi's solo show at Galleria Volga.

Saara Salmi is half of the photography studio Atelieri O. Haapala, the arbiter of all things Victorian.

now | here - the sin of extravagance

There is no drink but champagne.
There is no cabaret but one.
Saturday night, The Champagne Circus
I can't imagine being anywhere else.

now | here - HDW LIVE

Helsinki Design Week LIVE is kind of a miracle. Shows from Vuokko and Tuomas Laitinen at the same event? Heikki Salonen and Samuji? Someone has worked some tremendous magic behind the scenes.

Not to mention the R/H show and DJ set, not to mention the dulcet tones of Anna Järvinen and Mirel Wagner. See it to believe it.

clean | laundry - Kaksitvå

The guy above is kind of good-looking, perhaps a little rugged around the edges. Cool sweatshirt, of course -  perhaps a bit of a trim is needed? I'm sure she takes care of him. Because she certainly takes care of herself. That sweater dress by Kaksitvå is one of the necessities of this season and is absolutely destined to become a classic and is available at the Indian Summer Store. We're not sure about the guy.

light | vision - Ilona Sampovaara

The Unhappy Rabbits show at Art Alex Gallery is a study of how guilt can disguise itself as innocence. Ilona Sampovaara's new works tie together themes such as Adam and Eve, playfulness and the cruelty of children.

Ilona is a Finnish artist residing in Mexico, and the works in the gallery show the progression in her themes from the anthropomorphism of dogs to exposing the sins and fragilities of humans through using animals as images. Ilona also uses her paintings as muses in her Victorian-esque jewelry line, the Bug Girl Co. Small glimpses of faces and little objects decorate tempting silver and brass lockets and charm bracelets made with vintage beads and Swarovski crystals.

light | vision - Artist Peter Jones

You need color. Color environments have the power to calm, energize, enrage, entice and inspire you.

Peter Jones' Colourscape is a maze of colored spheres suspended above the ground with ropes. Allow yourself to be yellow for a while, or sit in gray and allow yourself to absorb the blending colors around you. At times the true color is too intense to interpret, and at times you will be soothed like a baby.

Colourscape is part of the Turku European Capital of Culture 2011 program.

light | vision - Artist Vesa-Pekka Rannikko

The Aalto pavilion in Venice as reinterpreted by Vesa-Pekka Rannikko

Vesa-Pekka Rannikko whitewashes architecture, art and the act of displaying art at the Venice Biennale. In the installation "...and all structures are unstable", the familiar Aalto pavilion is covered in a temporary and transient sheath of white boards. Inside, the video shows repainted found paintings, found paintings being painted over in white, and the process of painting the white screen for the video, all overlaid with new color.

Everything becomes white, or even nothing, in the end.  Rannikko calls into question what art and its display really mean, if they mean anything or if it means everything to the work. Does it matter if a painting is whitewashed, or simply repainted? The haunting images of Rannikko's found paintings, which he repainted in black and white, lead us through a new understanding of whitewash.

Unknown (2010) by Vesa-Pekka Rannikko. Repainted found painting in black and white

whois | neon - SAARA KIVIMÄKI

Neon is a brightness that a person has naturally. Like talent or personality, it marks someone and leaves a glowing trail for those who follow them.

Shoe designer Saara Kivimäki is one to watch, but with her brightness, that will be easy.

Find these clogs at Napa Gallery and Shop.

whois | neon - TANJA KURITTU

Tanja Kurittu's Notice me! collection is classic neon. Since Tanja started picking up reflectors to use in her jewelry, strangers have started to drop them in the post to her. Friends of friends will bring reflectors to her when they know they might meet her. The echoes of a good idea just keep on returning.

The jewelry fits the neon girl too. The brightness catches eyes, and the pop from flash photography is unbelievable. Make sure to pick up yours from Galleria Koru or Design Forum.

Thanks to neon girl Tiina Palm for the photo

now | here - Fennicize your Space

If you wander into Lumi's new flagship store downtown, you might as well be wandering in the Finnish countryside picking berries. A forest of Finnish ash trees hold up the bags, and the shelves are lined with Finnish elk. As you enter the shop, you rub against an elk skin curtain holding back the chill Finnish winds. Watch out for bears!

This is all the fault of the log-building artists and designers at Mestariwerstas and my WoodLabo, and the traditional elk and reindeer tanners Kokkolan Nahka. These guys will Finn you up.

clean | laundry - TYRA THERMAN

Ladies, remember, a proper foundation is important for any outfit. Whether one is dressed for a ball or for tea, one mustn't allow oneself to be half dressed.

In other words, keep your muffins on your plates. And let Tyra help. Tyra Therman knows underwear and corsets, and now you can find her collection at Liike as well as her own boutique, Punavuoren Putiikki, at Punavuorenkatu 1.

P.S. The swimsuits are hot too.

light | vision - Photographer Milla-Kariina Oja

From the home series, Border of a City, 2010

Is home where you live, or is it where you are? Photographer Milla-Kariina Oja places dreams about home in settings of harsh reality in her new series, Home-Project. The settings are both very familiar and local or very foreign and distant. You are either lost or found, but always alone no matter where you find home to be.

If you can, see it in person at Valokuvagalleria Hippolyte before the 29th of April.

clean | laundry - MINNI F.RONYA (Fin)

Minni F. Ronya is a new Helsinki based ready-to-wear label for women that is founded by designers Anne Törnroos (the Finnish Young Designer 2009 award winner) and Minni Havas, who is well known for her beautiful  fashion illustrations .  Their recently launched a/w 11 collection is cute, playful and simply stylish, all at the same time. The best introduction to this delightful collection is to let the designers speak for themselves:

A mix of functionality and spontaneity , the label pays attention to detail in fit and finish while introducing wild printed patterns and avant-garde shapes in their ultimately wearable garments. Minni F. Ronya pairs tailored shapes with soft tones and self illustrated imagery. Inspired by popular culture, the A/W 2011 collection gives iconic motifs such as camouflage and paisley a new life. Using high quality fabrics, it plays with flannel and jersey as well as translucent and textured wool creating versatile pieces and their effortless combination.

Minni F. Ronya's Shop Online opens in July; other retailers will be announced later this year.

Also, visit Minni Havas’ web site to see more of her amazing illustration work.

Who?

Rule 1: the Fashion
Rule 2: the Trend
Rule 3: the Truth

Because we see something together that just one person does not see.
Because you need a looking glass.
Because the future is clear. And opaque.

We are a group dedicated to showing the truth of what the future holds. Our magazine is a showcase of our worldview. We can produce media in any form, paper or digital. We show what is coming next to those who need to know.
